Insight into the project

A comprehensive building automation system was installed in our client's restaurant in Frankfurt. building automation system with Loxone to optimally combine energy efficiency, ease of use, and ambiance. The modern restaurant, with around 150 seats, a bar, kitchen, and event area, wanted to take both technical operations and the guest experience to a new level.

Before the project began, lighting, shading, heating, and music were each controlled separately—a significant effort for staff and associated with considerable energy losses. The goal was to combine all systems into a single, intuitive solution while creating a stable foundation for sustainable restaurant operations.

At the heart of the installation is a Loxone Miniserver,which centrally controls all systems. Various extensions , lighting, ventilation, air conditioning, audio, and energy monitoring are intelligently networked with each other.

In the dining area, an automated lighting control system creates an atmospheric ambience that dynamically adapts to the time of day and usage. Bright and friendly in the morning, warm and dimmed in the evening – all scenes run automatically or can be controlled via tablet or Loxone Touch Pure . In combination with the Tree weather station , shading via blinds and awnings is also controlled automatically to prevent glare and overheating.

The temperature and ventilation control works according to demand: using sensors for temperature, humidity, and CO₂, the system detects the current room quality and automatically adjusts accordingly. This ensures that the indoor climate remains pleasant for guests and staff at all times – while keeping energy consumption low.

Another focus was on energy optimization in the kitchen. Electricity consumption can be monitored in real time. The system detects peak loads, analyzes energy flows, and can automatically prioritize or delay certain consumers in order to reduce overall consumption.

About the Loxone Audio Server , coordinated background music is controlled in the various areas – guest room, bar, sanitary facilities, and outdoor areas. Volume and source selection are automatically adjusted according to the time of day, but can be adjusted by staff at any time.

The entire system is controlled via a central visualization and app control . This gives restaurant management access to lighting, climate control, audio, and energy consumption at all times. Warning messages in the event of technical malfunctions, open doors, or temperature deviations are automatically transmitted via the app.

Significant advantages became apparent shortly after commissioning: Energy consumption for lighting and air conditioning was reduced by around 25% , and workflows in service and the kitchen were significantly simplified. Staff can focus more on guests, while the building handles many processes independently.

With Loxone building control, the restaurant now has an intelligent, future-proof solution that ensures efficient processes and a unique guest experience. Perfect lighting, optimized energy distribution, and a pleasant indoor climate not only make the restaurant smarter, but also more sustainable in operation.

The first step towards real energy management is to know where the energy flows to in the building, how much it consumes and how much it produces. The Loxone energy flow monitor plays a central role here. All data can be displayed in real time in an appealing visualization in the Loxone app. This information provides a clear overview of the building's current energy status and allows targeted optimization measures to be taken.

By evaluating consumers, it is possible to find ways to reduce the base load, for example by automatically switching off consumers that are not needed. Potential energy leaks are also uncovered. Frequent energy wasters are, for example, air conditioning systems or ventilation systems that run at high levels even when no one is in the building. Reducing the base load leads to immediate cost savings. For example, the permanent consumption of one watt costs around €3 per year. This may sound small, but it quickly adds up in a household or business with numerous appliances. In addition, reducing the base load helps to reduce the carbon footprint and extends the life of the appliances.
